La Cloche Lake Travel Tips

When crossing the border to Canada you need proof of citizenship for each person, particularly children.  These documents will also be important when returning to the US.

Please note: The rules for the documentation required for travel to and from the United States is changing. For absolute certainty, we recommend the use of passports. We also recommend that you apply for them early because the waiting time to receive them can be lengthy. To aid in the process of getting a passport, the number of sites available for application has been increased. For example, in Ohio the Clerk of Courts offices now provide passport services. There usually is a Duty-Free Store located just after the toll booths at the border. You can buy duty-free beer, alcohol, and tobacco. There are limits on the amount of alcohol and tobacco that you may import and export. Ask at the counter. If you take more than your limit, you must declare it and pay duty.

You may not take any small arms into Canada. All other firearms (including air rifles, cross bows, etc.) must be declared. Mace is also not permitted.

Radar/laser detectors are illegal in Ontario. If you have one, put it in the glove compartment or otherwise disable it.

Exchange your currency at a bank to get the best rate, or use your bank cards for cash at ATMs. There is a Royal Bank branch, with ATM, on Hwy. 17 in Massey. Credit card charges are also a good exchange mechanism. Your card provider will make the conversion at the current rate when you are billed.

All speed limit signs in Ontario are in kilometers/hour. To convert, multiply kilometers/hr by 0.6 to get miles/hr.

You can get fishing licenses from Roger and Cheryl at La Cloche Lake Camp or the Shell Station in Massey on the East end of town, about four blocks past the traffic light.

This station also has a small convenience store. The Freshmart Grocery is located just East of the traffic light. Although small it is very complete. There are various stores on Imperial St. both North and South of Hwy. 17. Additional stores are available in Espanola.

There are a number of fishing license options. The first option is the time period, the second is the type, regular or conservation. The regular licence limit is usually a maximum of six fish per each game fish species per day. The conservation license has a corresponding limit of two per day per species. The cost of the conservation license is about 50% of the regular license. There is no limit for panfish. Your possession limit is the same as your daily catch limit. If your limit is in the freezer you are limited out. You may not keep any lake trout or walleye from La Cloche Lake because they are being stocked in the lake.
